If you live near a college campus, you probably have seen the signs pointing incoming students where to go to find their dorms, register for services, buy books for their classes, and find the dining hall. In Baltimore where I live, I see students all over the urban campuses walking up and down the sidewalk with Target and Walmart bags filled with blankets, sheets, pillows, and cookware - the essentials of college life.
It’s also that time when students are discovering that life in college is often accompanied by anxiety coming from every direction. New relationships, unfamiliar surroundings, grades that matter for real, social scenes, peer pressure on fleek, and being on their own for the first time for many. While most work their way through this without too much overwhelm and damage, many do struggle and need support. The first step is often going to their college’s student counseling center. But when short term therapy isn’t enough, it’s important to know what resources are close by for mental health care.
The Body Image Therapy Center is located in the center of both Baltimore and Washington, D.C., within shuttle, subway, or walking distance to college campus life. For most, we are the first stop in the treatment of a developing or worsening eating disorder. For others, we are a mental health program able to assist those suffering from anxiety, depression, and other psychiatric needs.
