I’m obsessed with watching YouTube videos. Usually, I’m glued to makeup, hair, and grwm (get ready with me) videos, but recently I’ve started watching Buzzfeed videos more often. A few days ago, I came across the video “Things Men are Tired of Hearing About Their Bodies.”
It’s funny because even though I’ve worked in the ED/body image world for a number of years now, most of my clients have been women. As a result, I’ve often only worked from the female perspective. Of course I know men can have ED, but I forgot to consider that men face the same body image issues and stereotypes placed on them that so many women face on a daily basis.
The truth is, men are also critiqued and judged by their bodies, and what may seem like praise or just a joke, can actually have lasting hurtful consequences. The men in the video begin each phrase with “I’m tired…”
I’m tired of being …
- Of hearing to be a man you have to have facial hair
- Hearing you’re too skinny to be a man
- Eat a sandwich man
- Do you lift bro
- If you lack that you’re less of a man
Men face the same body shaming and scrutiny as women, but no one ever seems to talk about this. As a society, men are not supposed to feel, thus not be impacted by such comments. That couldn’t be farther from the truth. Everyone is impacted by messages they receive from the outside world, friend, family, media, etc.
This includes men. Again this video opened my eyes to a perspective that I’m not accustomed to working with on a regular basis. I especially love the end of the video.
- My body is a gift
- My body is cool
- My body may be skinny but I love it
- It may not be perfect but it’s mine
- My body is mine
That can be said for everyBODY.
