Cruising yet again on my favorite website, Pinterest, I came across this little picture. I thought it was so cute and truly shows how a little perspective and optimism can go a long way. Clearly this cute little turtle is not flying (or is he?), but he’s looking at his life and circumstance in a new way, which makes an otherwise distressing situation (him stuck on his back) into a joyous, celebratory event. The same can be true for recovery.
So many times, people look at the recovery process and potential setbacks as the end all and be all, a complete failure if struggles or relapse occur. However, I challenge you to try and see the optimism, the “Oh my God!!! I’m flying …” moment within the process. Maybe you binged after having no binges for over a month, but maybe this time the binge didn’t last as long, or you reached out to your support system to get you through it. I’d call that an “Oh my God!! I’m flying …” moment. Or what if you had the urge to self-harm but chose instead to create a beautiful collage or painting depicting your feelings – that’s right, “Oh my God!!! I’m flying.”
Again, the point I’m trying to make is that recovery, and life in general can throw you some wicked curve balls. However, it’s important to remember that it’s a journey and a process, and one (or several) challenge(s) or setback(s) do(es) not completely discredit all the work you’ve done and how far you have come thus far. Take a moment to acknowledge and remember your “flying” moments because optimism is indeed the best way to see life and recovery.
