You wake up, step on the scale and see a number. You are either happy or upset by what you see. You go into the kitchen and check the nutrition facts on the container of what you eat. You add up the numbers of all the calories and carbs that you want to eat and figure out how much you can have for that meal. You go into work and think about what time you can eat your next meal. How much time will have passed before you can eat something? You go to get lunch and look up the nutrition facts online for your meal. You add the numbers from this morning and figure out how many calories and carbs you can consume and still have “leftover” for dinner. You leave work and go home to work out. You know if you work out for a long enough period of time you can burn off enough calories so you can eat more food for dinner. You work out and weigh yourself. You are not happy with the number you see so you don’t eat dinner. You look at the clock and see how the time is creeping by because you are so hungry. You go into the kitchen and are so hungry you eat cookies. You lose yourself in this moment you don’t realize until after that you ate a dozen cookies. You feel shame and step back on the scale, see the number – more shame. You look at the clock and realize it’s so late and you need to get up early for work. You try to fall asleep but can’t stop thinking about all the numbers – the number on the scale, the number of calories you ate versus the number you burned, and the number of hours you will restrict tomorrow to make up for the binge that evening.
