Recently, three girls in the United Kingdom decided to start a petition to encourage Victoria’s Secret to change their slogan on the new campaign. The campaign used the slogan “the perfect body” to advertise their new bras. These three girls started this campaign to promote healthy messages for women. Regarding the new campaign, the girls wrote on the petition:
All this does is perpetuate low self-esteem among women who are made to feel that their bodies are inadequate and unattractive because they do not fit into a narrow standard of beauty. It contributes to a culture that encourages serious health problems such as negative body image and eating disorders.
The girls were able to get over 29,000 signatures and enough publicity and support from others that Victoria’s Secret changed the slogan from “A Perfect Body” to “A Body For Every Body.” The girls started the twitter hashtag #iamperfect and encouraged women to tweet at Victoria’s Secret to encourage them to change their slogan. The girls are still working to get Victoria’s Secret to take down all their posters in the stores with the slogan, “A Perfect Body.”
This kind of petition is exactly what we should be seeing in social media these days. We have so many different forms of social media available to us that we should put it all to good use! Use Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Tumblr to get real and discuss issues like body image. This kind of thing will attract others and promote good causes. We spend so much time on the Internet we might as well put our actions to good use. Let this inspire us all to start our own petition, hashtag, or whatever to fight for what we believe!
