“What’s constant across nearly all societies and eras is that ‘clear eyes, good skin, and long, lustrous hair are always good signs of beauty’… ‘They are reliable, honest signals because they are hard to change’… ‘When has disease, red, running eyes, hair that’s falling out and skin lesions been attractive? Ultimately beauty is a matter of good health and the evolutionary product of likely reproductive success. There is nothing arbitrary about beauty.”
The above quote is taken from an article in a recent Baltimore Sun newspaper. The article discusses how beauty can be determined by the influence of others. It posits that people find attractive what they think others also find to be attractive. Although this can be true as evidenced by certain celebrities that everyone finds attractive it is also true that there are certain physical things that are found to be attractive because they are signs of being in good health.
I think that what is important that people take away from this article is that being in good health and living a balanced life makes someone very attractive to other people. Therefore, it is true that you can be healthy at any weight as long as you are keeping yourself in good health, both mentally and physically. Just as someone that is far underweight raises a brow of concern, someone that is overweight can appear similarly unhealthy if they are not demonstrating positive, healthy behaviors. Being ‘healthy’, and thus attractive, is centered on living a balanced lifestyle, maintaining moderation and variety in all of the facets of life; when an individual is able to radiate the good vibes that come alongside living well, attraction will come naturally.
