I’m really pissed. I mean, wow, just really upset. Marie Osmond has been shooting commercials as a spokesperson for Nutrisystem for some time now. But her latest commercial is repugnant and repulsive.
She tells the viewer that when she was overweight, her mother shamed her for being so. In the commercial, Marie recounts the line her mother used, “You don’t want to end up like me, do you?” My first reaction is her mother was probably overweight or obese and ashamed of her body. That’s bad enough for a parent to pass down their destructive body image issues to their child. But then Marie shares that soon after this moment, her mother was dead. So we are to now understand that being overweight or obese will lead to our imminent demise!
Lose weight or you’ll die!
That’s the message from this commercial. Now, I’ve seen some blatant anti-fat commercials in my life. But this one? YOU’LL DIE JUST LIKE MY MOM! Takes the cake.
Just to set the record straight – here are the facts about obesity and mortality. There are just four behaviors that predict health: eating a balanced diet with fruits and vegetables, getting 30 minutes of exercise three times a week, not smoking, and drinking alcohol in moderation. If you compare those who are obese and practice these four healthy behaviors and compare them to those who are normal weight and do them, there is no difference in mortality. None!
Now let’s look at the facts about those who diet. More than 90 percent of those who lose even just 10 pounds will regain it within three years. Nearly 100 percent will regain their weight in five years. Of those who diet, more than 40 percent will gain more than they lost, and typically choose less healthy behaviors due to their sense of failure and ineptitude. You see, we’re taught the problem isn’t the diet, it’s YOU! What nonsense.
Marie Osmond has sadly joined the weight loss puppet masters. She is using her good name for a bad purpose. I hope one day she learns how destructive she is being, just as her mother seemed to have impacted her with fear of fat. Still, I have to shout out loud. Stop it Marie! Stop it!
