Do you feel emotionally empty inside and use food to try and fill that void?
Do you eat because you're bored, angry, stressed out, excited, depressed or anxious?
Do you end up feeling guilty about what you eat but still feel compelled to eat more, even if you're stuffed?
If so, you may be on the verge of or even in the middle of a a more serious condition called Binge Eating Disorder. This is not a trivial matter and should be treated as soon as possible.

Emotional eating triggers
There are some common areas that trigger emotional eating for people. Here is a simple review:
- Social: eating to appease food pushers, to alleviate social anxiety, to calm yourself after an argument
- Emotional: to "fill the void" of loneliness, manage anxiety or depression, to celebrate achievements, or out of boredom and fatigue
- Situational: food commercials or advertising, passing restaurants or bakeries, social or sporting events where food is offered
- Thought:
self-doubt, thoughts of worthlessness, thinking you can't stand not
eating the food, that you'll never be able to change your relationship
with food
- Physical: eating to soothe physical pain, exhaustion, headaches, excessive hunger after skipping meals
Whether you consider yourself a food addict, obsessive compulsive eater, binge eater or emotional eater, knowing your triggers and the role food plays in your life are the first steps. But
therapy will help you challenge your beliefs about food, learn to
manage your triggers, and discover and master new, healthy ways to
manage your mood.
I love this quote from Dr. Michelle May's book Eat What You Love, Love What You Eat, and feel it speaks to how we define recovery from emotional eating.
"When I'm hungry, I eat what I love. When I'm bored, I do something I love. When I'm lonely, I connect with someone I love. When I feel sad, I remember that I am loved."
Understand the difference between hunger, craving and desire. Discover what emotions you're really covering up. Learn to live the happy, healthy life you deserve.
